Avocado and A Reader Compliment

Spring is in full swing and life has gotten busy as ever. There is so much to blog about that my brain is swimming with stories, events, wine, and food. I have been I am working on a few posts that have soaked up several hours, and they are not close to ready. But it has been a while since you have heard from me, so I wanted to get something out today.  So today, I have an avocado hack, a nice compliment from a reader.  Oh, and I started doing private wine tasting parties. Details to follow on that front.

Avocado Hack

Some of you may already know this, but it is new to me. I had to share.

I love avocado.

But up until recently, I hated buying avocados. If I could find a ripe avocado at the store, seventy-five percent of the time, it would be brown inside. I learned when I need one that day; I am basically screwed. So I needed a plan B. I read somewhere that you should buy the unripe, hard avocados and keep them in the fridge. Two days before you need them, take one out, put it in a paper bag and stick it in a dark place for two days. Sounds simple enough, but I do not plan my meals two days in advance. I never know what I am fixing until I open the fridge so that does not work at all.


Fast-forward: I was at Costco on March 1st, and they had a bag of six hard, unripe avocados for $5.99. I had been seriously craving them. The regular grocery sells them for at least $2.00 each, so I knew this was a good deal. But there is no way I could use all six avocados before they would ripen and then go bad, so I decided to flip the suggestion above. I’d ripen all six first, then refrigerate and then hopefully use as I want/need. I have wasted so much money on avocados that this experiment seemed worth the risk. I just want a ripe avocado!!

So I put the bag of six into a paper bag and stuck it in a dark space. I set an alarm for 2 days later to see if they were ripe. They were not so I gave it another day. Ah, they were perfect (on March 4th), so they all went into the crisper drawer except for one that I ate in a salad for dinner that night.

Watson, I think I have got it!

One day later (March 5, 2019)
Six days later (March 10, 2019)
Fifteen days later (March 19, 2019)
Twenty-one days later (March 25, 2019)

I have one more waiting for me and it has been 23 days since I bought them and 20 days since they went into the fridge. This has never happened to me. So glad I figured this out. Yes, I love avocado that much.

Heard from a Reader Recently

I have a story to share (with permission, of course but the names and companies have been changed to protect the innocent).

To set this up, please note this is from a reader and former high school classmate (I will call him Bill) with whom I connected at my 40th high school reunion two and a half years ago and then again about nine months ago here in Charleston. We had dinner here in Charleston, and I learned that he is quite the chef but knows “nothing” about wine. That said, since the reunion he has been a loyal reader of the blog because he wants to learn.

A week ago, I got this message…

“Hey …, I was at a pricey business dinner, “Fortune 100” Company’s treat, in Atlanta on Monday and ended up “in charge” of the wine pairings. {I} totally faked it. {I} just channeled you and Gary. Racked up $800 bucks or so on “Fortune 100” Company’s tab. An Alsatian Pinot Grigio with the chilled seafood tower. An expensive Malbec with the steaks and a delicious port with dessert. Couldn’t persuade them on a rosé course though.  {I} just used all the buzzwords {you have taught me from your blog}.

My Response: That is great. We both got a good laugh about the rosé course. Not surprised especially if it was a bunch of middle-aged men.

(in my head I am seeing a bunch of “guys” guys with chests all puffed out…. or this picture below… kind of the same thing)

I responded – I’d love to use this in a blog post. I’ll make it anonymous both you and the company.  It’s just so fun, funny and shows that you’ve at least learned “buzzwords.”

“Absolutely you may. There were eight alpha dogs, aged 45 to 70, at the table. First time meeting for a couple of us. Lots of sniffing and hearty banter.”

I guess I was right with my visual imagery of who was at the table. I am just glad, I have given “Bill” something to work with when out at a corporate dinner.

    Thank you for the avocado hack! We love avocados and we always buy 2 or 3 at a time that are rock hard. So, we end up waiting a couple of days, just not yet ripe enough and wait another day, then it’s too far gone. We tried your hack last week and they were beautiful! Thank you again!

    • I just ate the last of the six almost a month after purchase. It was very ripe but still green and delicious.
