Wine Round Up: Winter

The other night at a dinner party a dear friend thanked me for turning him onto dry rosé wines. He said, At first, he only bought the brand that I shared with him but has since branched out and is trying and finding a slew of new rosé wines he loves.  Additionally, the other day in a conversation with another friend she told me a similar story but then added that since she has started to go to the Strong Coffee to Red Wine wine tastings, she has learned that her wine palate is much broader than she ever imagined. As…

One Year: Wow, It Flew By

Oh. My. God. Where did the time go? One year and a month ago, I started Strong Coffee to Red Wine. I can’t believe that the anniversary passed already and I did not notice. I guess that is because my nose is to the grindstone. But alas, it dawned on me today as I was reflecting on some of the comments I have recently received regarding recent posts… Ginger was thrilled to have found all of the Cariñena wines at her local Trader Joe’s and is having her own tasting party on Super Bowl Sunday while “the boys” watch the game.   Last…

Tasting Recap, Little Big Thing & A Recipe

Wine Tasting Recap, A Fantastic Little BIG Thing, and A Bonus Recipe This past week was absolutely amazing. The week started with a birthday brunch and drinking bubbles. And because you asked, I also have a bonus recipe for you.  I am posting the Frittata recipe at the end of this post.  Next, I have a Little BIG Thing that is a  fantasmagorical find. I am super thrilled about it because it allows me to move towards no longer using plastic storage bags. Then on Thursday, we had the Pinot Noir Wine Tasting that was a raging success at Monarch Wine…

Monarch Wine Merchants * Pinot Noir Tasting * 01/18/18

Whew! Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Christmas, New Years, and then Snow-mageddon. I need a drink! Good thing the January SC2RW wine tasting and social is set for January 18, 2018, at Monarch Wine Merchants.  Justin, owner and wine man extraordinaire has put together a great line up of five fabulous pinot noir wines to taste and share. This tasting is that is not to be missed. Did you see the article in the Post & Courier last week about the “‘new’ wine school train of thought” and how Charleston has jumped on board? Monarch Wine Merchants is central to this story, so there is no better…

Gamay Beaujolais Tasting

If you happen to be having a wine “expert” over for drinks and you want to impress? Serve a Gamay Beaujolais. But make sure to serve it at fifty degrees. She will think you are the hippest winester in town.  If you choose a wine from Chénas or Fleurie, she will bow at your feet. Apparently, Gamay Beaujolais is the “hip” wine to be drinking right now. This tidbit and much more were some of the things I learned at yesterday’s Gamay Tasting at Monarch Wine Merchants. David McCarus from McCarus Beverage Co. presented four biodynamic wines made by cutting-edge winemakers in…

Cheers: Sandhi Chard & Gobelsburg Rosé

Cheers to ya and Happy Wednesday. As the introduction to the first wine that I want to share with you, I need to bring up that book I just finished, Cork Dork.  About half way through the book there is a chapter titled, “The Orgy.” It is all about an exclusive wine event in New York City called La Paulée.  Imagine an event that costs $1,500 to attend, AND you have to bring your own bottle from your cellar. And not just any bottle either, it has to be a “treasure” aka extremely expensive and rare.  Ok, you get my…

The Independent Wine Store

You may think this sounds a bit over the top, but when I buy wine, it is a personal experience. Gary and I do not share the same wine preferences, so I am always in search of wines that are in our middle ground.  They need not be too fruit-forward (aka fruity) and jammy for Gary and not too many tannins (aka mouth parching) or high alcohol content for me.  Finding wines that meet these criteria without guidance from wine experts would be a significant challenge if not purely a guessing game. And I have done that all before but choose…
