Side Notes for a Friday

Side Notes: New Coffee Brewer For quite a while when we would brew a pot of coffee there would be a small, insignificant puddle of water under the brewer. Totally not a big deal until the insignificant became real and the puddle became a lake. We had to say goodbye to our Cuisinart 10 Cup Extreme Brew Coffee Maker that we had for at least 8 years. It has so many features that I love: Bold Brew setting Replaceable Water Filter Thermal Carafe Easy to clean Stainless Steel Programmable The two most important features are the Thermal Carafe and Bold Brew setting as I like my…

Social Media, Grandma & Homemade Mexican Beans

I have apparently turned into my grandmother. Social media once again has reconnected me with my past. By request, I am posting my Mexican Black Beans recipe.  And our stainless steel straws are awesome! So let’s begin. I am my Grandma When I was a kid and visiting my grandparents home, I can vividly recall my grandma washing and re-using plastic bags and aluminum foil. I used to giggle because I thought that defeated the purpose of one-time-use products. In my grandma’s case, it was because she was a child of The Great Depression. It was a habit as they needed to do…

Raindrops on Roses: Favorite Thing or Two

Whenever I think about a favorite thing post, I always start singing the song from the Sound of Music. I am sure I have seen that movie a hundred times, and it never gets old. After posting my wine box shelves, I had a request to show the rest of the wall. So here it is.  As I said, Gary and I collect. Eclectically, yes… but it is still a collection. We also love bright colors that “pop”! So these are the two walls of our kitchen. Favorite Thing or Two Favorite Thing: Dark Roast DeCaf Coffee Beans Good decaf coffee is…

Side Note: This and That for the Weekend

It has been a whirlwind week. I can not believe that it is the weekend already. We had family in town, so we have been out and about most nights which was super fun. So for this post, I am calling it Side Note as I am piecing together various moments from the week. The Indian dinner we had on Monday was flawless. The Chicken Tikka Masala was a huge hit. I also made an accompaniment called Raita which is to provide a “cooling” effect that tames the heat from some of the dishes. The recipe is below. I think…

little BIG thing Part 2 and Bonus Recipe

So what is a little BIG thing again, you may ask? Well, it’s something so small it really should not be worth the real estate on the blog but has changed my life in a way that is huge.  These three things are such little BIG things! * The Chiller Wine Bag * This little BIG thing is so very cool. Pun intended. We first saw The Chiller Wine Bag all over France, and we were immediately taken by its practical function and simple design.  Unlike the popcorn popper above, this is a space saver.  Maybe you can put your…

Question & Answer: On Life, Liberty and Wine

Actually, I am only answering questions about wine.  I will leave life and liberty to someone else. Question 1.  What is terroir and how do you say it? Answer: First, it is pronounced {terr-wah}.   Terroir the French word used to describe the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.  Because all plants gather their nutrition through the ground, the water, and the sun, these elements all play a significant role in creating flavor in grapes that are unique to that location.  Looking at the ground in the images below you…

little BIG Things and a Bonus Recipe

It’s Thoughtful Thursday, and I am “thought-less.”  Now don’t be mean and go “there”…  So, I decided if not thoughtful then I should at least be helpful and share a few little BIG things.  These items are little gadgets, whatnots, and ideas that changed my life in a BIG way.  In the past, one of the little BIG things included the OXO Good Grips Soap Dispensing Dish Scrubber.  This is a new link as this newest version includes a great caddie that catches water run-off from the sponge (be sure to order sponge refills).  I love it!  Have a Snoring Spouse? Mighty Plugs are…

Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens…. Favorite Things

Today seems like a great day for some Favorite Things.  Anyone that knows me is aware that I am not a shopper.  When I find something I like I am very loyal and will stay true until it is no longer available.  I have basically 5 ways that I learn about new gadgets, clothes, foods, and other favorite things: Amazon, Costco, Blair, referred by a friend, or an internet ad. Favorite Money Saver I love my Sonicare toothbrush and have been faithful to the brand for years and years.  I do have to admit that I hate paying $8-12 for…

A Messy Relationship

Save the Shirt, You Cheapskate! Food and I have a messy relationship, especially sauces and oils.  I love them and they love to drip and splatter on my shirts.  When I am cooking or when I am eating it does not matter. Making salad dressing, boom! Olive Oil on pasta, boom, Melting Butter, boom! Gravy, boom!   Seems like if it is a fat, it will end up on my shirt and leave a messy stain.  So I was thrilled to read on Facebook that artificial sweeteners will lift oil stains from clothing.  The claim is that because the sweetener is a…

Pet Peeves and other Annoyances

Sorry, I lured you in with an adorable picture of Breezy… this is not about pets.  I have nothing thoughtful to say today. I am in agony.  My hayfever/allergies have really knocked the crap out of me.   The trees and plants are happy as all get out making us mortals absolutely miserable.  When I am miserable I want to whine, and can’t really drink wine because I can’t taste it.  So here I shall whine… with some of my pet peeves. WTF…. Pet Peeves Single ply toilet paper Really? I mean REALLY?  What kind of tight wad are you?  It’s rough…
